NB. I do mean that it's terrible how the foie gras is produced. At the same time, I must admit it's very tasty, even though I hate almost all paté types...
To make this snack will take some patience. The thing is that foie gras is best when served cold while the toasts should be warm and a bit crispy. And, if you are not an experienced French, opening the foie gras can will make you suffer physically in addition to bad consciousness. The cans are made for you to pay for your sins, rather than to be opened. And even if you don't lose any blood in the battle, it is likely to take plenty of time. So I suggest to get the can opened first, before you start with the bread :) And be careful with the sharp edges.
You will need:
A block of neutral foie gras, chilled.
White bread or a baguette
3-4 cherry tomatoes
Rocket salad
3-4 dates, better soft and relatively fresh
2-3 table spoons of sesame seeds
Some neutral liquid honey
Lets get started!
Cut four slices of bread, each about 8-10 mm wide.
Start to warm a thick frying pan with sesame seeds. Don't use any oil, and make sure to pick a thick pan. Cut the dates along and remove the stone, then divide each in four pieces and add them to the frying sesame. Don't overheat the pan, and shake it once in a while so the dates get rolled in sesame, and nothing burns. When the sesame becomes yellowish, remove everything from the pan, and put there bread instead. The bread should be fried on both sides right after the sesame to give a it a light aroma.
While waiting for the bread to be done, cut tomatoes in 4 pieces each. Put rocket and tomatoes on the plate.
When the bread is ready, first spread it with some foie gras fat, then put cold and thick foie gras slices (approx. 4-5 mm thick). Place toasts on the salad, add dates with sesame, and top with some honey.
Enjoy immediately :)
Best served with green tea, wine or sour juice.
